What You Can Do About Toenail Fungus

Posted on

Toenail fungus can make your toenails thick and appear discolored. If you have toenail fungus, it may be due to a health issue, or you may have simply picked up a fungus that has attacked your toenails. Either way, if you have toenail fungus, you may not want to be out in your sandals too often, or you may try and hide your toes in the sand while at the beach. There are other things you can do about your toenail fungus though. Read on for tips to help you get rid of it.

Clip Your Nails

Clip your nails often to help the nail grow out and hopefully grow the fungus out of the nail as well. You should clip your nails every couple of days, which may prove to be difficult, as your nails are going to be very thick. You may have to use a pair of heavy-duty clippers, or you may need to go to a foot specialist to have your nails clipped or trimmed down for you. If you go to the podiatrist, they may use a grinder, rather than clippers, but the results will be the same.

Apply An Anti-Fungal

Apply an anti-fungal ointment to your nails to help get rid of the fungus. You can find anti-fungal ointments at your local pharmacy; some are applied like nail polish onto the nail. Apply it as directed daily and watch your nails transform. The anti-fungal ointment kills the fungus that lives on and within your nail to help clear it up. This, along with clipping your nails, will help to get rid of the fungus.

Prevent Fungus To Begin With

Preventing the fungus to begin with is important. If you have gout or you have diabetes, you are at a higher risk of getting nail fungus or having other toe or foot issues. If you have either of these health issues, you should seek help from a podiatrist on how to take care of your feet properly. The body has a harder time fighting off this fungus when you have these other health issues, so it's important to take good care of yourself and your feet. Wear properly fitting shoes, keep your feet clean and dry, and make sure to not go out into public places barefoot to protect your feet.

If you have toenail fungus, go to a foot specialist for help getting rid of it.
